Situated in the extreme south of the Brazilian state of Pará, in the low mountain ranges on the doorstep of the Amazon rainforest.
This is an ecological paradise that is extremely beautiful. Lush, green and full of life. This area will leave you in a world of colour and tranquility.
The Region
The lodge location, at the edge of the massive Serra do Cachimbo reserve, offers tall Amazonian rainforests and more stunted white sand “campinarana” forests. Here you will find a good system of tracks and trails, through partly disturbed riverine and transitional forests, giving you access to a bird list that exceeds 500 species and the wonderful wildlife that lives amongst them.
The entrance road to the lodge passes through a beautiful area of white-sand campina, which aside from its specialty bird species is also home to an interesting botanical community of flowering plants and mosses, in addition to some fascinating lichens. With so much to discover, this area is home to thousands of plant species, bird species, fish, mammals, and different insects. The giant kapok tree, the creeping aroids, and other resident architects of the Amazon rainforest.

The Amazon is home to as many as 80,000 plant species from which more than 40,000 species play a critical role in regulating the global climate and sustaining the local water cycle. But the richness of species is one thing, and abundance another. While there may be many species in tropical rainforests, these often exist in low numbers over large areas.
Amazon plants and trees play critical roles in regulating the global climate and sustaining the local water cycle. The forests they form are home to the huge variety of animals found in the Amazon.
But their greatest riches yet may be the compounds they produce, some of which are used for medicine and agriculture. For Amazon people, both indigenous and recent arrivals, plants are a food source and raw matter for non-timber forest products

The birding at Rio Azul is remarkably good, with a surprising diversity of species found within a tiny radius just around the lodge itself. You need only roll out of bed and step onto the veranda of your cabin, and the Southern Amazon specialties are all around you!

Rio Azul is also home to several species of primates, some of which regularly show up around the lodge itself. Keep an eye out for, white-faced spider monkey, red-handed howler, red-nosed bearded saki, brown capuchin and Azara’s night monkey, brown-throated three-toed sloths, capybara and Brazilian squirrel. During river trips you could possibly see Brazilian tapir, giant river otter and neotropical otter. Rarities such as jaguar, puma and even short-eared dog have all been seen here.
Seeing a giant anaconda, will most certainly be a once-in-a-lifetime encounter. These semi-aquatic snakes thrive in slow-moving streams, rivers and other muddy marshy environments. Caiman also lurk in the waters, the largest predator in the Amazon ecosystem. This is an ecological paradise, with an abundance of incredible wildlife to be enjoyed.
And don’t overlook the smaller creatures that keep the ecosystem alive. Bugs and butterflies, darter frogs and spiders. These are the true gems to tick off your Amazonian list.
